How to deal with racism #2: The Thick Skin pt 2

One of the blaring signs that you don't have a thick skin is violent reaction. It means your armor has been penetrated and you are wounded. The evil traffic cop let's everyone through but you and then you're sitting there in your car overheating. So you jump out, deliver the broken nose that he or she deserves and BAM! You're in jail. Does anyone in that ridiculous traffic jam defend you? No, because people suck and all they saw was your fist in a stupid face. The poor, innocent traffic cop starts crying and tells everyone they don't understand what happened. They love everyone equally. Why are people so racist? Now suddenly you're the bad guy and all in that implies. Racists twist the truth as easily as a snake twists itself. Here you are now in jail where they already think you belong, with less rights than you had in the first place.

You yell racism, because it's the plain truth. It's quite a scandalous thing to be racist in this racist age. So, to cover their sorry butts, racists will add other things onto your record so that they won't look racist. How about the cop who stops you because of your race, and then on the spot just makes up a citation for a cracked window he or she didn't see until they stopped you? Now you have more problems. Fighting fire with fire makes a bigger fire.

In this dumb day and age, people enjoy rioting. They think it will fix something, or they just like not going to school or work, whichever comes first I suppose. It obviously doesn't work. It just makes more tension. Now the area is in turmoil, and YOUR private property is being damaged even though the riot is for you! Does that make any sense? Non-violent reaction equals self preservation.

Now, let's rewind. You don't jump out and punch the fool, you don't react like a madman or madwoman. You are polite, you are kind, you are downright amiable. Now your car overheats and you have to evacuate. Now there really is a big hullabaloo. People come, they somehow realize the traffic cop wouldn't let you through, and now he or she is branded. They call him or her racist for you. The law is on your side, you're not in jail, there's no riots, and everybody feels guilty but you.

Next time you want to sock the jerk who yells at your child for no reason, or who obviously gives better service to someone else in the restaurant than to you just because they're racist, just think, how much better is it to go home at the end of the day? You can take out your angst on a punching bag as opposed to fuming in jail. They win if you're in jail for something they caused. But know you don't have to be acted on like a pawn on a chessboard. Your proper decisions will make you victor at the end of the day. Another layer of protection is added to your thick skin.
